Online poker tournaments are fun way to spend an afternoon.  When you are playing poker, you may not know that you can play tournaments that are vastly different than playing cash games.  In cash games, you will sit at a table with a certain amount of money and once that money is gone or you have won the amount you want to win, you can stand up from the table and go do something else.  The blinds remain the same and you can play for as long as your money lasts or as long as you want to.  When playing tournaments, your strategy will have to be different as you will be playing only as long as your chips last.  Most tournaments are considered freeze outs, which means that you can not re buy for more chips.  There are re buy tournaments offered and you can choose to play those if you like having a second chance to make the money.  When playing a freeze out tournament, you will buy in for a small amount and be able to win a substantially higher amount if you are the first place finisher.

When playing poker en linea tournaments, and live poker tournaments like the World Series of Poker, you will be competing with a large field of players.  All players will be at tables that will have nine or ten people sitting at them.  The main goal is to get as many chips as possible and ultimately to have all the chips and win first place.  You do not need to win first place to get a cash reward however, you can still “cash” if you only finish “in the money”.  In the money means when the online poker room starts paying out finishers at a certain place in the tournament.  The blinds will increase at a set time, usually ever ten minutes so you need to play smart in order to accumulate enough chips to out last the blind increases.  This is the best strategy to finishing in the money and giving your self a chance at first place.
